Some 10,000 people taste giant Papa a la Huancaina

Over 10,000 domestic and foreign people tasted the world’s biggest papa a la huancaina prepared under strict health regulations in Huancayo’s Business International Center of Junin on the occasion of Peru’s independence day.

The event was organized by Provincial Municipality of Huancayo and prepared by 180 people including students and mother representing 87 Comedores Populares (soup kitchen) from Huancayo.

The chef Juan Carlos Fernandez detailed that 3,000 kg of Yungay potato were needed as well as 400 cans of milk, 200 kg of fresh cheese, 200 kg of ají Amarillo pepper, 200 lettuce and 2500 eggs, 10,000 olives, 12 kg of salt, 30 kg of onions, 10kg of garlic and 5 gallons of vegetal oil, 30 kg of cookies and 500gr of nutmeg.

The gastronomic festival called “La papa a la  Huancaina mas grande del  mundo” (The world’s biggest Papa a la Huancaina) was held as part of the activities for celebrating Huancayo’s tourist month 2010.

Huancayo’s major Freddy Arana Velarde recalled that this is the third consecutive year organizing this activity to promote one of the city’s emblematic dishes.

“This traditions have to be upheld, la papa a la huancaina must continue to be one of Peru’s gastronomic 7 wonders”.

To offer more comfort to visitors, this year 7 buses were available to transport people for free to the event venue.
