Detailed Itinerary

Day 1.- Community of Chitapampa- Chimpu Orco High PassLive-in Tourism in the Community of Patabamba

This adventure begins with a short bus ride towards the community of Chitapampa (3579 meters above sea level) located in the Taray district in the province of Calca. From there, we will slowly ascend towards the Chimpu Orco Ravine and head towards the high pass with the same name. As we hike, we will come across fields growing products such as potato, corn, lima beans, and Andean grains such as the kiwicha, quinua, and cañihua. We will take a break for lunch as we pass the first high pass near the community of Callarayan.

Our journey will then continue towards the second high pass where we will come across traces of one of the many Inca trails. From there, we will descend towards the Andean community of Patabamba. In Patabamba, the members of the community and their families will wait to welcome us. Our group will divide into sets of two, heading to a local family’s home where they will provide us with food and a bedroom for sleeping. This particular community is well known for the quality of their textiles, naturally colored dyes, and the stories that are told with each design they weave. In the afternoon, our new families will take us to collect flowers and plants that are used for dying wool and will then teach us the process in which they produce their woven goods. In the evening we will have a small get together to learn the local dances of the community and perhaps dress in their colorful costumes.

Day 2. – Community of Patabamba – Inca Trail of the Sacred Valley- Sihuas- Pucamarca-Leon Punku Canyon – Huchuy Qosqo Ruins

After saying goodbye to our families, we will walk along the natural balcony of the Sacred Valley which is, on average, 600 meters above the Valley itself. The view from the balcony is impressive and from here one can see the small towns of Calca, Lamay, Colla, and Pisac. You can also see the snow-topped peaks of the mountains La Veronica, Pitusiray, and Sawasiray. Our trek ascends slowly passing the community of Sihuas in order to later pass through the ruins of Pucamarca which was used in its prime as a checkpoint and entrance/exit control for travelers in this specific zone.

After lunch we will begin our descent towards the archeological site of Huchuy Qosqo (3656 masl). Our trail crosses a spectacular canyon, known as Leon Punku, which has traces of three original Inca bridges and one original Inca Trail. Along the path you will be able to see multiple bromeliads and other types of vegetation that are typical to the zone. Crossing through the canyon you will also be able to see landscapes so incredible that they will purely take your breath away. We will continue descending until arriving at the Huchuy Qosqo Archeological site where we will set up camp for the night. Later in the day we will also have time to explore the site and marvel at the beautiful views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas below. This archeological complex was constructed approximately in the 15th century and has its own ceremonial center with finely finished stone pieces of the “Inca Imperial” category as well as many terraces.

Day 3.- Huchuy Qosqo Ruins- Community of Tauca-Ollantaytambo-Aguas Calientes

This day begins early and will be the longest of all the days. Our route ascends with a naturally preserved Inca Trail where one can see multiple terraces used by locals for the cultivation of potatoes. Along the trail it is also possible to see small forests of polilepis and bromeliads. In the middle of our ascent we will come across an Inca construction that served as a control point to count how many people traveled between the Sacred Valley and the Plains of Chinchero.

Little by little the vegetation begins to dissipate and we begin to see more Ichu (high grasses) which indicates to us that we are entering the zone of Puna, where the cold is more intense. Approximately three hours later we will arrive to the Huallataccassa high pass at 4216 masl. From here it is possible to see small lagoons which serve as resting points for migrating birds. From there we will slowly descend towards the Valley in the direction of the Piuray Lagoon. The trek will finish in the community of Tauca.

From this point, we will travel by bus towards the small town on Ollantaytambo where we will take a two hour train to the town of Aguas Calientes, arriving at night to sleep in a hotel in the town. (Dinner this evening is not included.)

Day 4 – Aguas Calientes- Machu Picchu- Cuzco

Early in the morning we will take a 25 minute bus ride towards the citadel of Machu Picchu. We will then climb towards the “house of the guardian” where we can watch the sunrise in this World Wonder. Later we can visit the citadel in a two hour tour with free time to explore and discover on your own all of the marvels of this natural and cultural wonder.

In late afternoon we will return in train to Ollantaytambo where a bus will be waiting for us to take us back to Cuzco.

Machu Picchu is considered one of the 7 Wonders of the World. This structure was built by the Incas in their expansion and conquest of the jungle and its abandonment remains a mystery today. After its inhabitants left the citadel, abundant vegetation quickly covered the city and its existence was lost in history until 1911 when American Historian Hiram Bingham made his famous scientific discovery of the city, calling it the Lost City of the Incas.

Machu Picchu can be found in the eastern slopes of the central Andes Mountains. Its name means “ Old Mountain” and it was constructed totally in stone. Machu Picchu is considered a master work of architecture and engineering, both of which helped the city to achieve visual harmony with the environment surrounding it. The World Wonder, Machu Picchu, is also a protected locale on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

ITINERARY

Day 01.- CUSCO – PISKACUCHO – WAYLLABAMBA

Starts: Piscacucho 2680 msnm. (8962 Ft) Campsite: Wayllabamba 3060 msnm. (10039 Ft)

Distance to cover: 11 km, or 7 miles Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours approx.

We will pick you up from your hotel in our comfortable private bus till the locality of Piskacucho located at km 82 from the railway of Cusco – Machu Picchu. At the Inca based bridge is the check in point to enter to the Inca Trail and the place where this exciting adventure in the Andes starts. Roughly at 10am. we will start our walk towards the archeological site of Llactapata, the largest ruins at the Inca trail, this walk is going to be gentle and a good warm up for the second part of the day, Then at Hatunchaca our staff of cooks and porters will give us a delicious lunch, after a brief rest we will restart to walk, and approximately 2 hours later we will arrive to the Andean community of Wayllabamba place of our first camp.

Day 02.- WAYLLABAMBA – WARMIWAÑUSCA – PAQAYMAYU

Start: Wayllabamba 3060 msnm. (10039 Ft.) Campsite: Paqaymayu 3580 msnm. (11745 Ft.)

Distance to cover: 12km (7.5 miles) Hiking Time: 7 to 8 hours aprox.

Early in the morning we start our walk towards the highest point of the Inca trail, in this path we will have the opportunity of observing different climates and microclimates passing through the rain woodlands of Yuncachimpa till the grassy mountain of Warmiwañusca and after a slow ascent we will arrive at 4200msnm that is the highest pass on this hike, moreover we will have the opportunity of appreciate the majesty of the Andes, after a brief rest we will restart the descent towards a place where is going to wait a warm lunch, After it we restart the trek towards Paqaymayu’s as known as well as river of the dawn where our team will be waiting for us with the camp and dinner ready.

Day 03 .- PAQAYMAYU – CHAQUICOCHA – WIÑAYWAYNA

Starts: Paqaymayu 3580msnm. (11745 Ft.) Camp: Wiñaywayna 2600msnm. (8500 Ft.)

Distance to cover : 14km (8.7 miles) Hiking time: 7 to 8 hours approx.

After our breakfast we will start our journey towards the archeological site of Runkurakay, where we will have the opportunity of know a bit more this place, we retake the path and we will pass by two high Andean lagoons till arrive to the second highest pass at 3850msnm (12631 Ft.), this pass takes the same name of the archaeological site visited before. A descend waits for us up to Sayacmarca or Dominant Town, where from it is possible to enjoy an impressive view of the valley of the Aobamba, there the path ascends a bit towards the clouded forest until Phuyupatamarca or village on the clouds. This archaeological group possesses one beautiful ritual fountain, a leafy vegetation and a spectacular panoramic view of the valley of the river Urubamba. After a brief rest we will start descending across the clouded forest by a series of long steps that take us towards Wiñaywayna or Forever Young. Our third camp waits for us, we will have free time to visit and to explore the surroundings.

Day 04.- WIÑAYWAYNA – MACHUPICCHU – AGUAS CALIENTES

Starts: Wiñaywayna 2600msnm. (8500 Ft.) Final destination: Machu Picchu 2400msnm. (7874 Ft.)

Distance to cover: 6km (3.75 miles) Hiking Time: 2 hours approx.

Very early in the morning we will begin a trek of approximately two hours, up to Inti Punku’s sector or Sungate and will have the opportunity to admire the sunrise on the majestic city of Machu Picchu. From there we restart the descending till the city where we will register our arrival in the check out point, then we will start our visit of approximately 2 hours and a half. Then you will have sufficient time to be able to explore and discover by yourselves the mysteries that hides this enigmatic city. Later we will descend by bus to the settlement of Aguas Calientes and we will finally approach the train with direction to Ollantaytambo, where a bus will wait for you to lead you up to your hotel in the city of the Cuzco. Machu Picchu was recently honored to be part of the New 7 wonders of the World, plus its one of the top World Heritages on the list of UNESCO. It is not mentioned in any of the chronicles on the Spanish colony. Nowadays no one can exactly say on its function. It been studied for scientist for decades but many unanswered questions remain. The town was forgotten on the time for centuries and covered by the rich vegetation until July 24th 1911 when the American historian Hiram Bigham was led by 11 year old boy and made the scientific discovery of Machu Picchu. Actually he was in the search of the lost town of Vilcabamba.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Those passengers not interested or able to the hike the Inca Trail, can choose to spend 2 days in Cuzco, then travel by train to Aguas Calientes. Next morning they take and early bus to the Machu Picchu entrance and meet the hikers at the ruins. Please advise your travel agent or Footprint Expeditions if you decide not to do the hike the Inca Trail at the booking time. Also note that the Inca trail will be closed for a general maintenance during the the month february Note: * The camps are subject to authorization of the Unit of Machu Picchu’s Management and the availability of spaces is determined by the INC. Therefore the camps before mentioned are referential. * The passengers who want to visit Huayna Picchu, will have to report to the guide as soon as possible before arriving at Machu Picchu, since there exists new regulation that limits the number of visitors per day to only 400 persons and is necessary to register and moreover is only possible to enter till 11am.

Detailed itinerary:

Day 1: Cuzco – Cachicata quarry – Ollantaytambo

Beautiful hike through an ancient Inca trail, starting at the village of Ollantaytambo and finishing at the Cachicata quarry where it is possible to observe the working and moving stones technique used by the Incas; it also possible to enjoy the beautiful view of the Vilcanota river. At night, train to Aguas Calientes where we spend the night.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu – Aguas Calientes – Cuzco

Early in the morning, we hop on the bus that will take us up the famous Lost City of the Incas; we can observe the sunrise and then start a guided visit of approximately 2 hours through the most important areas and interest. There will be enough time later to explore and discover the marvellous Machupicchu. Later, descend to the town of Aguas Calientes and finally take the train to Ollantaytambo and a bus back to the hotel in Cuzco.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, Machupicchu (literally, in quechua, «old mountain») is likely to be one of the most important cities built during the conquering by the Incas of the jungle and low lands, rich in food, medicinal plants and coca leaves. It is considered a religious sanctuary and a astronomic centre, and one of the greatest architectural/engineering works of all times. Machupicchu remained abandoned and forgotten for four centuries, covered by a thick vegetation, until 1911 when the American archaeologist Hiram Bingham made its existence public.
